MARKEY MOVES TO EXTEND IMMIGRATION OVERSIGHT MEASURE

Will co-sponsor reauthorization of Employment Eligibility Verification Program

Congresswoman Betsy Markey has signed on to legislation that would extend the federal electronic employment eligibility verification (E-Verify) program for five years.

Congress created the E-Verify program in 1994 as a voluntary means for employers to submit names and Social Security numbers of new employees for matching to the Social Security Administration's database. H.R. 662 would reauthorize the Department of Homeland Security's E-Verify program for five years. Without congressional action, E-Verify will expire March 2009.

"This bill will address one of the critical aspects of America's immigration crisis: the need for a tough and effective federal employee verification system," said Rep. Markey. "Businesses must comply with immigration laws, and they depend on reliable information from the federal government about the citizenship status of employees. This bill is about giving businesses the tools they need to do just that."

H.R. 662 has been referred to the House Committees on the Judiciary, Education and Labor, and Ways and Means.
